While my Spanish isn't perfect, and my accent is not exactly the same as a native speaker's accent, I am often mistaken for a native Spanish speaker based on my pronunciation and never quickly identified as an American speaking Spanish. This is because I used several strategies to work on my accent and sound as much like a native speaker as possible. No, YOU DO NOT NEED to sound like a native speaker in another language. This is a personal choice, and I decided that I didn't want to sound too American when I spoke Spanish because superimposing English pronunciation onto Spanish words felt inauthentic to me, and I wanted to really feel like I was speaking another language. Since English and Spanish sound very different, replacing Spanish sounds with English sounds and having a thick American accent would make it sound like I was just speaking English with Spanish words. However, if you try to achieve a native accent, it will also make you a clearer communicator, and it can bring you tons of social benefits, especially if you live in the country where your target language is spoken.
