These frames are built with hard maple, and feature purpleheart splines in the corner for strength and style. Picture frames aren't very difficult to make, but there are a lot of small details that can change the outcome. I've made plenty of picture frames throughout the years, and it always seems to take longer than it should because of the time required to calibrate power tools, build or set up jigs, and verify that each angle and measurement is exactly as it should be. This was one of my smoothest builds yet, mostly thanks to some extra time spent making a better spline jig for the table saw.

Photo frames in A2 format are not so easy to get and if, then usually quite expensive. So I set out to build elegant photo frames from beech wood myself.

The frames should be made of wood, elegant, cheap and be built without machines. The hand miter saw is a great help, but it would also work with a miter box (maybe less precise).

Since I used textured fine art paper for the prints, I didn't want a glass in front of the images. I used protective spray instead, so one can enjoy this beautiful fine art paper in its full glory. There is enough space in the photo frame for a glass in front and an acid-free protection layer behind the print, just have to use a different hanging mechanism.

I am super happy with these photo frames. The cost of materials was about 20 euros, including fine art paper and ink for the print. The time required for the first frame was quite high - I had to pay a lesson there and wasted some wood.
The last frame was done in about 2 hours not counting glue, oil and spray drying times.

Material list per photo frame:
- 6x beech wood strips 10x17x1000mm
- Glue
- Sand paper (grade 80, 120, 240)
- Linseed oil
- Electrical tape (flexible but strong)
- 3mm MDF A2 size (ordered pre-cut from hardware store)
- Masking tape
- 2x eyelet plates & 4x screws
- Wire
- Nails

Tools:
- 3 clamps
- Hand miter saw (can also use these simple wooden ones)
- Metering rule
- Hammer & Nail (a drill makes it easier)
- Screwdriver

Picture frames don't have to be complicated, but the hardest part is always figuring out the math, so here's a quick summary to keep in your back pocket:

Formula to figure out the rail sizes: Rail length = picture length + (2 x rail width) - (2 x groove width)
Dado depth: I like to always use 1/2 inch which gives space for the glass and a 1/4 backing material as well as the picture, a mat, and the glazing points for keeping everything in the frame.

How to Attach a Canvas?
I like to use pressure to hold canvas wall art inside a frame. So, you can make the frame just large enough to hold the canvas snugly OR you can add small wood blocks to the back of the wood picture frame to hold the canvas centered in the frame. Just brad nail the blocks around the canvas where needed. Then you can remove the blocks later, to reuse the picture frame.
